Freycinet & Wineglass Bay
One of Tassie’s most celebrated views, a very close second in fact to Cradle Mountain, is the East Coast’s Wineglass Bay, in Freycinet National Park. Perhaps the main differnce between the two is that a little more effort is required to actually see Wineglass Bay than Cradle Mountain, which is located right in front of Tasmania’s most scenic car park. At Freycinet, the easy option is a 30 minute one way uphill walk to the lookout, or the slightly longer (and in my humble opinion infinitely more rewarding) walk up Mt Amos. I did the walk in the early morning with headtorch, gloves and brekkie in my pack, and crossed my fingers the view would be nice.
It was indeed a great morning, and this time rather than spectacular sunrise or sunset colours and mirror reflections of any kind, this morning was all about a more subtle beauty, of the east coast “in action”. There were rain showers off at sea, light blue/grey clouds complementing the greenness of the peninsula, and a nice bit of morning light on the granite coast. Maria Island was visible in the clouds further down the coast, and the lagoon full of water. The view from here really opens out before you, and it is a fantastic place to sit and just look.
Wineglass Bay is the obvious centrepiece of the national park, but the views of the hazards from Coles Bay are great as are the Friendly Beaches in the northern section of the park. There is lot to see in this part of the world!
All images are available through my Tasmanian Landscapes Gallery, 46 Melville St Hobart. I am working on a “Portfolio” section of this blog, keep an eye on the “Portfolio” page tag above, I am working on that as time goes by.
