Tarkine and North West

Trowutta Arch

The Trowutta Arch is a fascinating bit of geology found along the Tarkine drive in Tasmania’s north west. The drive is well signposted and the walk is very easy, only around 10-15 minutes each way. The walk passes through some beautiful open rainforest, myrtles and tree ferns are the order of the day. I visited...Read More

Red Hygrocybe mushroom Tasmania

Today’s post is about this nice red fungi. I dont know much about it other than that it is reasonably common in the Tasmanian rainforest.  I am quite sure it is a Hygrocybe. I have a sneaking suspicion it might perhaps be a Hygrocybe firma, but for the time being here are the pics 🙂...Read More

Some more Tarkine fungi treasures

Every autumn I visit Corinna running a 5 day photography tour. One of the highlights is the fungi, which is in peak season from April through June. This year I visited Corinna once, and Philosopher Falls a few times. Here are some of the fungi we found during the May 2018 Tarkine photography tour. The...Read More

Canary Worm – Tarkine

Well, this was a surprise – I spotted what I thought was a yellow fungi on a  mossy tree trunk up on the banks of the Savage River with my group a few weeks ago. I left the scene and came back a little while later only to find that the fungi had moved (or...Read More

Lovers Falls, Tarkine

Lovers Falls is one of the highlights of a trip to Corinna. Made even more special due to its seclusion, it is only accessible by kayak, or chartering a small boat from Corinna meaning you aren’t likely to encounter hordes of tourists at any given time. The path in to the falls is very high...Read More

Arthur Pieman Conservation Area Orchids

All the orchid photos I have been sharing lately are from the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area in Tasmania’s north west. This area, as its name would suggest, encompasses the land in between the Arthur River in the north to the Pieman River in the south. Most of the region is coastal scrub and buttongrass plains,...Read More

Tasmanian Beard Orchids (Calochilus)

Next I have some, in fact all three, of Tasmania’s beard orchids to share with you. The three types of beard orchid are the pale, the strap and the purple. All three are found around Arthur River in Tasmania’s Tarkine region. Here are a few photos 🙂

Greenhood orchids

Continuing the orchid theme, next up are some greenhood orchids. Again from the Arthur River area, there were quite a lot on display during late October, and we were extra fortunate to find a few of the very rare Arthur River greenhood (Pterostylis rubenachii) and the rather striking long yellow bearded Pterostylis tasmanica. This was...Read More

Tasmanian Spider Orchids – Caladenias

The Tasmanian Spider Orchids, or Caladenia species, were in full flower late October in the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area. Here is a selection of images, some as shot, others cropped, to show the delicate features of the flower. They were literally everywhere, and our guide Geoff was commenting it must have been the best season...Read More

Edge of the World

The Edge of the World at Arthur River on Tasmania’s west coast is a landscape as dramatic as its name implies. I was up there at the end of October to photograph orchids and made sure to spend some time on this wild coastline hoping for some nice light, and boy was I rewarded!

A Beautiful Tarkine Waterfall

A truly beautiful Tarkine waterfall, I have visited here many times and enjoy every minute spent in this location. It is such a delicate area, there is no track and the falls are not on any maps so visiting here is a wonderful experience just sitting silently and enjoying nature. Being in such a well...Read More
