Autumn in Japan is well known for red maple leaves in the rustic old temples and manicured gardens of Kyoto. Another highlight of the season for me is the countless river gorges and waterfalls of the Tohoku region (north of Tokyo) that display all the colours of the autumnal pallette.

Renge Falls in Fukushima is one I’ve visited a few times over the years, but never in autumn. So a few days ago during our annual visit to Japan I headed straight up there to see it in with brilliant yellow leaves dotted across the scene.

The waterfall itself is obviously great to photograph, as is the river downstream, between the falls and the car park. There was a very nice amount of water so it was very enjoyable lining up some shots of cascading water and delightful autumn leaves.

Autumn in Japan Photography Workshop

Part of the reason for my visit to Japan this year was to plan for a new tour – my Autumn in Japan Photography Workshop, which will be going ahead in late October 2025. Just like my Tasmanian photo tours, this will be for a small group only (maximum of 6 guests) with all expenses included.

This tour offers guests the opportunity to learn not just about camera settings and composition, but also to learn about Japan with your bilingual guides (my wife will be joining us) and experiencing some of the wonderful Japanese hospitality of the rural north.
