Callington Mill Oatlands at Night

The Callington Mill Oatlands is the most eye catching of many lovely old sandstone buildings sprinkled all through the town. Built in 1837 as a flour mill it has had an on-again, off-again history. Its current incarnation sees it as an integral part of the Callington Mill distillery which took over the site in 2021.

Access to the site is free, and 24 hour access is possible too. In fact, the site is lit up at night, which makes for some striking photo opportunities. During my first week as part of the councils Artist in Residence program I visited the mill at night to get these shots.

During the photo editing process I tested one or two images out in black and white, and found that they came out quite nicely. I am preparing an image now to display in Oatlands for the remainder of my stay – or until some lucky visitor snaps it up first!

It was a clear night, with the southern cross and scorpius quite visible to the eye above the mill. They didnt appear strongly in the photos, however, mainly due to the artificial lighting.

I will be at the AIRspace in Oatlands from Thursday to Sunday each week of September. I have prints, cards and my book “Timeless Tasmania” all available for sale and have been enjoying meeting locals and visitors alike during my first week in the residency. The address is 79 High St Oatlands.

See you there one day soon!
