Sunset and sunrise, favourite times of day for every landscape photographer. Even when the conditions aren’t “perfect” its always great being out and about at these times of day. And then there are the times when conditions are in fact “perfect” and it is an absolute joy indeed!

Up at the Bay of Fires recently during one of my personalised private 3 day photography workshops, we found ourselves looking at dark grey clouds through the late afternoon and had more or less resigned ourselves to a grey sunset.

For most of the session it was about menacing grey clouds and the waves crashing on the granite boulders – perfectly good photography subjects in their own right – but as sunset got closer, a brilliant pink light burst from the horizon, lighting up the clouds and reflecting off the sea to create one of the nicest sunsets I’ve seen up that way over many, many years.

End of an Era

On a related note this sunset may also turn out to be the last sunset I shoot with my trusty ol’ Pentax K1. I have used Pentax since the 1990’s and my K1 since May of 2016 – nearly 10 years now!

Needless to say, 10 years is an eternity in terms of digital camera technology, and with no news at all from Pentax re a new model for many years now, I have jumped ship. Going forward I am using the Sony A7RV, and I’ve got the “starter kit” of a 16-35mm f2.8 as well as their 90mm macro. Two lenses I simply cant do without!

I look forward to getting to know a whole new system and will report back on life in the world of Sony in the weeks ahead 🙂
