Tasmania Shaped Coronal Hole

No its not the latest in schoolyard bully insults, it is a perfectly positioned coronal hole on the sun, slowly spinning into position to (hopefully) spark up some nice displays of the aurora australis in the days ahead. Perfect timing for this weeks Bay of Fires photography workshop too! I’ll be watching this very closely in the next 24-48 hours!

Follow its progress here.

UPDATE Sept 18 – it seems the solar wind arrived here at planet earth during daylight hours on September 15. The solar wind speed in particular remained elevated for a few days, however, for the most part the Bz remained positive and a big aurora display didn’t eventuate – at least not here in Tasmania 🙁
