Night sky photography during The Off Season in Tasmania

During winter and spring 2021, the first two weeks of the month are new moon and therefore best in terms of long, dark nights. In Tasmania, the long nights of winter lend themselves to glorious photographic opportunities. Quite simply there is no better time to embark upon a personalised and private photography tour with a special emphasis on the night sky!

The Milky Way rising over the Tessellated Pavement on the Tasman Peninsula

The Milky Way is stunning at this time of year, rising in the east right on dark. If you are really lucky, you might even “see the light” on your journey – the Southern Lights, or aurora australis, that is. The aurora cannot be guaranteed in advance of course, but as they say, the thrill of the hunt is a still pretty exciting – and your Tasmanian playground is beautiful in the winter light even without an aurora.

In terms of locations – and with a specific emphasis on the night sky in mind – the following destinations would best suit an Off Season night sky photography adventure: the east coast including Freycinet, Bay of Fires and the Tasman Peninsula; and of course, Cradle Mountain.
