NEW FORMAT: 4 Days / 3 Nights. Next dates: April 9~12, 2018
I have reinvented my Bay of Fires workshop as a 4 day trip, allowing ample time to explore Tasmania’s east coast from the rugged Hazards and sublime Wineglass Bay in Freycinet National Park to our base in St Helens. We sill shoot sunset and sunrise in multiple locations around the Bay of Fires, as well as enjoy a side trip to the wonderful rainforest at St Columba Falls. A post processing tutorial is also included. The dates coincide with dark skies to enable a night sky session or two shooting the stars, milky way and with a bit of luck the aurora australis.
Day 1: Depart Hobart for St Helens Highlights: “Camera Talk” introductory session upon arrival, followed by a late afternoon and sunset session in the Bay of Fires.
Day 2: Full Day in the Bay of Fires Highlights: Sunrise and sunset sessions on the east coast. Locations such as: Eddystone Point and the Picnic Rocks; the Gardens.
Day 3: Side trip to St Columba Falls Highlights: Stunning half day in the rainforest at St Columba Falls. Another dusk shoot in the Bay of Fires, staying out after dark for a night sky session – experience the Bay of Fires by moonlight!
Day 4: Half day at Freycinet National Park Highlights: Half day exploring Freycinet National Park. Walk to the Wineglass Bay lookout and admire stunning coastal scenery including the Cape Tourville Lighthouse and Honeymoon Bay. Return to Hobart around 19:00.
* The day to day order of activities is subject to change, but we will visit all listed locations. We won’t shoot a sunrise after the night sky session.
$1595.00 per person (SINGLE/PRIVATE ROOM) or $2790 couples rate for two people in a twin share room. Tour will run for 3-6 participants.
Includes three nights accommodation in a Water View room at Tidal Waters, St Helens, all transport (starting & finishing Hobart), National Parks entry, all meals from lunch Day 1 to lunch Day 4. Camera notes and post processing notes are also provided. Post processing session. Participants will need to make their own way to/from Hobart.
We can arrange accommodation in Hobart prior to and after this workshop if requested (this cost is not included in above fee).
- Camera, tripod and accessories. Don’t forget chargers and spare batteries/memory cards!
- Wet weather gear (for yourself and for your camera). Warm clothing and head-torch for the sunrise/sunset shoots. Sun protection.
- Comfortable hiking shoes (not sneakers).
- Water bottle/snacks for our sessions in the field.
- A full list of suggested items and a detailed itinerary will be forwarded to you during the booking process.
Sunset is approx 18:00 and sunrise is approx 6:30 in April. We will spend at least one-two hours in the field for each of these shoots meaning it will be dark prior to sunrise/after sunset. We will not do a sunrise session after the night sky session.
We will only undertake easy hiking, the main aim of the workshop being tuition and shooting time. It is important to note of course that the nature of the workshop involves uneven rocky shorelines so please take care in the low light of dusk and dawn. The hike to Wineglass Bay is up to 45 minutes one way but the track is of a very high standard.
** Please take all care and responsibility for your own equipment while outdoors **
Tasmania’s east coast generally enjoys fairly mild weather, however it would be well worthwhile packing an extra layer or two in particular for sunrise and sunset sessions. A good sunhat and sun protection is recommended too. Please check the St Helens weather forecast carefully before the tour departs to get an idea of expected conditions and pack accordingly. An umbrella can be a useful piece of equipment too, especially if you enjoy macro photography. A detailed list of suggested items to bring will be forwarded prior to departure.
