4 Days / 3 Nights: NEW DATES September 12 ~ 15, 2017
(May 1-4 fully booked!)
This is a special extended version of my 3 day Cradle Mountain photography workshop, with night sky photography session/s a major feature of this workshop. The aim will be to shoot at Dove Lake, with stars and star trails and with a bit of luck the aurora australis too. During the day we will turn our attention to some of the most beautiful waterfalls Tasmania has to offer. We will shoot Crater Falls and Pencil Pine Creek at Cradle Mountain and take a half day trip to Philosopher Falls in the Tarkine. On our return drive to Hobart we will spend a few hours at the superb Nelson Falls and Lake St Clair. Another special inclusion is a visit to the Tasmanian Devil park at Cradle Mountain.
Day 1 (May 1/Sept 12): Depart Hobart for Cradle Mt Highlights: Afternoon exploring the ancient landscapes at Cradle Mountain – including our first sunset and hopefully night-sky shoot at Dove Lake.
Day 2 (May 2/Sept 13): Full Day shoot at Cradle Mt Highlights: Sunrise and sunset at Dove Lake; Waldheim and the rainforest including Crater Falls and Pencil Pine Creek.
Day 3 (May 3/Sept 14): Side trip to Philosopher Falls Highlights: Stunning half day in Tasmania’s Tarkine – amazing fungi. Approx 50 mins drive each way. Devils@Cradle to shoot the Tasmanian Devil.
Day 4 (May 4/Sept 15): Return to Hobart via Nelson Falls & Lake St Clair Highlights: Final sunrise shoot followed by shoots at Nelson Falls, Franklin River and Lake St Clair. Return to Hobart around 19:00.
* Night Sky Session/s will be scheduled based on weather.
$1595.00 per person – tour will run for 3-6 participants
Includes three nights accommodation in your own private room, all transport (starting & finishing Hobart), National Parks entry, all meals from lunch Day 1 to lunch Day 4. Camera notes and post processing notes are also provided. Post processing session will be scheduled one evening. Participants will need to make their own way to/from Hobart. We can recommend/arrange accommodation in Hobart if requested (this accom cost is not included in above fee).
- Camera, tripod and accessories. Don’t forget chargers and spare batteries/memory cards!
- Wet weather gear (for yourself and for your camera). Warm clothing and head-torch for the sunrise/sunset shoots.
- Comfortable hiking shoes (not sneakers).
- Water bottle/snacks for our sessions in the field.
- A full list of suggested items will be forwarded to you shortly before workshop commences.
Sunset is approx 17:20 in May and 18:00 in September. Sunrise is approx 7:00 in May and 6:20 in September. We will spend at least one-two hours in the field for each of these shoots meaning it will be dark (and likely VERY cold) prior to sunrise/after sunset.
We will only undertake easy hiking, the main aim of the workshop being tuition and shooting time. We will visit Crater Falls, which is uphill and approximately 30 minutes each way from Ronney Creek/Waldheim. The Philosopher Falls track is very good, but likely to be wet and perhaps muddy in places. There is a steep set of stairs at the end. Nelson Falls is a very easy 10 minute walk (one way) on a very good track.
** Please take all care and responsibility for your own equipment while outdoors **
Cradle Mountain in particular can present any type of weather at any time of year. Please check the Cradle Mountain weather forecast carefully before the tour departs and bring windproof and waterproof gear (jacket and pants), as well as lots of warm clothing including thermal layers and a down jacket. An umbrella can be a useful piece of equipment too, especially if you enjoy macro photography.
