Gordon River Cruise

A special highlight of any visit to Western Tasmania is the Gordon River Cruise. There are two cruises to choose from and they both include the same sights, so you wont miss out on any of these West Coast highlights whichever one you choose.

The cruise lasts the better part of 6 hours, and includes two stops. One on Sarah Island and the other at Heritage landing a little way up the Gordon River.

Heritage Landing is a great little introduction to the Tasmanian rainforest with lots of Huon Pine, myrtle beech and horizontal trees – amongst others. It is a short and enjoyable walk.

Sarah Island

A guided/interpretive walk on Sarah Island is also included. Sarah Island is Tasmania’s oldest penal settlement – older even than the well known Port Arthur. The islands history is very interesting and it is great to have the history explained during a short walking tour.

Normally the cruise departs early morning and includes lunch on board. During the longest days of summer there is an afternoon departure too. The day we cruised was incredibly calm, and we were able to head out through “Hells Gates” into the open ocean, which was completely calm – very rare for this part of the world. We even got to see Cape Sorell Lighthouse!

And how’s this for a sunset as we arrived back in Strahan!!

And it was nice to see my new book “Timeless Tasmania” available from the fine folk at World Heritage Cruises – thanks very much guys 🙂
