Tasman Peninsula Astrophotography
The Tessellated Pavements are a stunning place basically at any time, but at night it really is a great spot for some Tasman Peninsula astrophotography.

The whole area is only an hour or so from Hobart but staying at the Lufra Hotel is a great option as you can literally walk across the road, shoot for the stars, and be tucked up in bed shortly after – getting some sleep in before getting up for a Tessellated Pavement sunrise!

Photographing the Milky Way
While there is a little light pollution along the road to Doo Town, all in all, it really is a great spot for astro. The Milky Way starts to become prominent in late summer (see photo from March above) and through autumn and early winter really is quite stunning as it rises vertically on the eastern horizon (June photo below).

As spring and summer kick in the Milky Way becomes a bit more horizontal and more prominent in the Southern Sky. You can still get some great shots, but it doesn’t get dark until extremely late in summer. I captured the scene below in December, at close to 10:00pm, and the glow on the horizon was the twilight lingering (not the aurora which would have been nice!)

Tasman Peninsula Astrophotography Workshop
I am running a small group tour to the Tasman Peninsula area in March. Places are still available, and astrophotography is definitely on the agenda – the tour dates coincide with new moon to give us the best chance possible!
