kunanyi/Mt Wellington is the 1270 metre high peak that overlooks Hobart. It is unmissable as you drive into Hobart from any direction.

Situated to Hobart’s west, kunanyi/Mt Wellington is a great subject for sunsets. The dark silhouette of the mountain looks great framed by a fiery sunset sky. Photographed from the eastern shore you can also enjoy the twinkling of the city lights – a contrast of electric and natural colour and light as the sun sets. Sunrise and sunset from the top of the mountain is a great experience too, as the city lights twinkle below you and the clouds and mist flow around you.

What can I see at the Pinnacle of kunanyi/Mt Wellington

Up at the summit, known as the Pinnacle, there is a large car park with a public shelter and boardwalk for views of Hobart. You can scramble up to the highest point on the mountain where there is a trig point, or enjoy views of the plateau to the west with views of the distant mountains of Tasmania’s World Heritage Area. You can take a short walk in the direction of the Zigzag Track and South Wellington to see some really great dolerite (rock) formations too.

South Wellington Dolerite

The flatness of the summit means the days last light lights up the details of the dolerite boulders strewn all over the top, but particularly along the South Wellington track.

It is easy to access the summit of the Mountain. From Central Hobart just go straight up Davey St and follow it to Fern Tree. Turn right where you see the sign. It will take close to 30 minutes to arrive at the Pinnacle from central Hobart.
