Late winter and spring is a wonderful time for photographing the beautiful rainforests and waterfalls Tasmania is famous for.

Spring in Tasmania is the best time to get out and photograph Tasmania’s giant trees and waterfalls. The moss glows a beautiful green, the ground is soft underfoot and the waterfalls and creeks are full of fast flowing clean water from the Tasmanian wilderness.

Things to look for and photograph in the Tasmanian rainforest in spring

• Waterfalls are full of water, and long exposures with the silky smooth flow are very rewarding
• Tiny new growth of ferns uncurling from the spongy green forest floor
• Trees, the sassafras in particular, start to flower from late winter and make a beautiful carpet of white on the green moss when they fall.
• Fungi. Autumn is peak fungi season, but spring has some really delightful fungi including the brilliant pink Hygrocybe cheelli.
• Tasmania’s beautiful (but tiny) native orchids start to appear at this time of year too
• Late in spring the myrtle beech trees produce a brilliant orange and red display of new leaf growth

The best way to experience these places is slowly. Stopping to look in the nooks and crannies of the old growth forests. My range of Tasmanian photography tours are designed for exactly this. We spend a few hours on trails that for most visitors take just 20-30 minutes. We look for wonderful subjects to photograph – from the giant to the miniscule.

For photographers, its best to bring a tripod as well as whatever lenses and accessories you normally carry. We will discuss composition, accessories and all aspects of correct exposure for the dynamic conditions of the rainforest.

Smart-phone photographers and those who aren’t necessarily into photography but want to enjoy a slow paced day in Tasmania’s magnificent old forests are also very welcome to book the tour.
