2025 marks 20 years in business for us, and we have seen a lot change in that time. Perhaps most notably is the growth of tourism in winter – aka the “Off” season.

In years gone by you could count on very little activity from say June-August and we tended to just shrug our shoulders and say Tassie goes into hibernation at this time of year. It wasn’t totally a bad thing, as it was a good chance to take time out from zipping around the state running tours to sit back a little and plan for the busy year ahead.

The reason for the change is that Hobart learnt to embrace the long, dark nights of winter and basically turn what had always been regarded as a negative into something positive.

A very visual part of this newfound embrace of winter is the annual Dark Mofo festival. Instead of bunkering down and waiting the winter out all of a sudden there were light shows, winter feasts, music and arts – and more than one or two controversies!

Dark Mofo each year since 2013 has provided entertainment, events, and more often than not some sort of extremely photogenic light show – from laser lights to landmarks lit up in red, it has been huge for tourism and great fun for us photographer-types 🙂
