Pieman River Magical Mystery Tour
The Pieman River snakes its way through Tasmania’s Tarkine region and any visit to Corinna includes a fair amount of time on the river.
During my 5 day Tarkine Photography Workshop we base ourselves at Corinna and spend our days exploring the rainforest tracks, remote west coast buttongrass plains and of course the Pieman River.
Cruising the Pieman River
There are two cruise options, and this tour includes both. The first is a half day cruise on the historic Arcadia II, an old huon pine vessel. This cruise takes us all the way to the Pieman Heads, where the Pieman meets the wild west coast. We spend an hour or so here before reboarding and returning to Corinna. Searching for eagles (both Wedge Tailed and Sea) is a highlight of this cruise.
Sweetwater
The other cruise we do is an early morning chartered trip on the smaller vessel, the Sweetwater, to explore the smaller tributary rivers that the Arcadia can’t reach.
Doing this at dawn often results in stunningly still water, reflections and morning mist. Last year’s trip included some stunning mist which mostly blocked the sun but at times allowed for some quite haunting scenes as we sat in utter silence, immersed in the experience.
And just like the Arcadia Cruise, this one offers the opportunity to shoot birdlife – eagles are most common, but there are also pink robins and the real prize would be the Azure Kingfisher (which I am yet to shoot).
My next Tarkine (Corinna) tour runs from May 3-7. Contact me to book a place!
