Autumn in Tasmania: Fagus on Mt Murchison

Autumn has arrived on Mt Murchison, on Tasmania’s West Coast. Located right behind the small town of Tullah, Mt Murchison is a particularly rewarding walk, as it is the only place where all the mountains of Tasmania’s world famous Overland Track can be seen from outside the national park. Autumn is a particularly beautiful time to climb Mt Murchison as the leaves of Tasmania’s deciduous beech, the “fagus” turn to lovely shades of orange, yellow and red.

There is still plenty of green but anyone hoping to see this unique display of colourful autumn leaves should plan a trip in the next few weeks. Mt Murchison is accessed on the B28 “Anthony Link Road” which is one of the most scenic roads in Tasmania. I would recommend using this road to go from Tullah to Queenstown even if you aren’t planning to hike Mt Murchison.

Tasmanian Photography Tours & Workshops

For those interested in a guided photography tour to photograph the fagus, I run regular photography tours to Mt Field National Park which is the closest place to Hobart to view the turning of the fagus. During the autumn we will photograph the spectacular waterfalls (Russell Falls and Horseshoe Falls) as well as venturing further into the park to see this unique Tasmanian spectacle.
