Couta Rocks
The entire Tarkine coast around Arthur River is incredible, but the Couta Rocks would just about be my favourite spot in the area.
There is a timelessness to the area which is quite special. Waves pounding, wind howling and colours changing either at dusk or dawn.
Couta Rocks is just south of Sarah Anne rocks, in fact it would be very easy to spend a good chunk of your day walking and exploring between the two. The coast is very rugged here, and coupled with some ferocious weather and storm clouds you can capture some very powerful images.
Typically I quite like long exposures in low light settings, but this coastline also provided great opportunities to capture the power of waves hitting rocks. Often backlit by the late afternoon sun and always full of power.
While the west coast is great for sunset, it never hurts to be out in the dawn light either. The results from a shoot on a clear morning were quite serene.
These images were captured over many visits to the region over many years. I am heading up this way again in a couple of weeks for a brand new 5 day workshop based at Arthur River which has an extra focus on west coast sunsets. I also have a 6 day “Complete Tarkine” photography workshop scheduled for next autumn which includes two sunset shoots on the coast, as well as 3 nights in the rainforest at Corinna.
